Mixing Impure and Pure Clothes in the Laundry

Question:

If I put some impure clothes in the laundry along with clothes that are pure, will the pure clothes become impure? Please provide me with details.

Answer:

بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

If the impure clothes are dry and the impurity on it is not transferable then the pure clothes will continue remaining pure irrespective of whether they come in contact with the impure clothes or not. If however the impurities are fresh and / or moist and wet and transferable then, depending on the type of impurity, the pure garment will only be rendered impure when a particular amount of the impurity is transferred unto it. If the impurity is of a heavy nature (Al Najis Al Mughallazha) such as urine, semen, blood, wine etc. the garment will only be rendered impure if the impurity transferred unto it is the size of a dirham (which is equivalent to a Canadian 2 dollar coin). If on the other hand the impurity is of a light nature (Al Najis Al Mukhaffafa) such as the urine of animals whose meat we may consume then the garment will be rendered impure if the impurity covers 1/4th of the garment.
