The honourable ones are the bearers of the Quran and those who engage in ‘ibadah at tahajjud

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

What is the authenticity of the following Hadith?

أشراف امتي حملة القران و أصحاب اليل

Answer

Imams Tabarani, Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) and others have recorded this Hadith.

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The honourable ones of my ummah are the bearers of the Quran and those who engage in worship at night [at the time of tahajjud].”

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 12662, Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 2447 and 2977)

Bearers of the Quran refers to those who memorise the Quran, learn the meaning and act upon it.

(Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 1063 and Mirqat, Hadith: 1239)

Authenticity

The chain consists of a narrator who has been declared extremely weak.

(Refer: Mizanul I’tidal, vol. 5 pg. 36, number: 8616. Also see: Lisanul Mizan, vol. 4 pg. 29, number: 3379, Targhib, vol. 1 pg. 431, Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 7 pg. 161)

However, there does exist broader support for this subject matter.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
