Al Masjidul Aqsa, the second Masjid whose foundations were laid

Could you mention the reference of this Hadith?

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates, I asked “O Messenger of Allah, Which was the first Masjid built on the surface of the earth?” He replied, ‘Al Masjidul Haram [in Makkah].’ I then asked, ‘Which was built next?’ He said, Al Masjidul Aqsa.’ I asked, ‘What was [the period of construction] between the two?’ He said, ’40 years.’

Answer

Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 3366, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 520. Also see: Fathul Bari, Hadith: 3366)

Note:

The word used in the Hadith is ‘وضع’ which more accurately translates as ‘[Masjid] whose foundations were laid’

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
