Question:

I had a miscarriage at 3 months. I followed the rules of 40 days of bleeding after childbirth considering my baby’s body and features were developed. Is it ok to have marital relations after the bleeding has stopped, even though my 40 days are not over?

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Since the baby’s body and features were developed, you were correct to follow the rules of forty days after childbirth. 1

The discharge of blood after the birth of a child or after a miscarriage is known as nifās. You may not resume marital relations until completing nifās and take a bath. Nifās starts from the time of childbirth and continues until the bleeding stops. There is no minimum limit for nifās, but there is a maximum limit of 40 days after which nifās will automatically be over. It should be noted that for nifās to end prior to completing 40 days, the bleeding must stop for 15 days continuously. If the bleeding does not stop for 15 days, nifās will continue regardless of how short or random the bleeding is. 2
