Question:

Salaams. I had a miscarriage at 3 months. I followed the rules of 40 days after childbirth considering my baby’s body and features were developed. Is it ok to have marital relations after bleeding has stopped, even though my 40 days are not over?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

According to the rules of postpartum bleeding (nifas) there is no minimum time, thus the nifas will end once the bleeding stops in the case it is less than 40 days. In the case of blood continues past 40 days then ghusl will be necessary and will not be considered postpartum bleeding. In simple terms, there is no minimum time limit for postpartum bleeding, however, there is a maximum time according to the hadith of the Prophet (S.A.W) which is 40 days.

Therefore, it is permissible to engage in marital relations before 40 days when the blood has seized.
