Is It Mustahab To Go Down Into Sajdah Keeping the Back Straight

Question

While going from Qawmah into Sajdah:

1.       Is it Mustahab and preferable to go down into Sajdah keeping the back straight or should one bend the back slightly?

2.       Is it preferable to keep the hands on the knees while going into Sajdah or should the hands be left loose on the sides as they were in the position of Qawmah?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

While going into Sajdah from Qawmah it is preferable to keep the back straight as any bending counts as additional ruku (Ibn Abideen, Radd Muhtar, vol. 3, pg. 320-321; Fatawa Tatarkhaniyyah, vol. 1, pg. 543). It is preferable to keep the hands on the knees while going into Sajdah as mentioned in a hadith “Take assistance from the knees” (Fatawa Mahmudiyyah, vol. 5, pg. 218).
