If the Musalli Forgets To Sit for the Last Qaidah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

A Musalli is performing four Rak’aats Fardh of Zuhr, after the Sajdas of the fourth Rak’aat he forgets to sit for the last Qa’dah and stands up for the fifth Rak’aat:

1.       If he remembers that he has to sit in the Qa’dah before going into Ruku’ then what will he be required to do?

2.       If he remembers after the Ruku’ or after the Sujood then what will the position of his Salaah be?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

If the Musalli is closer to the sitting position, then he should sit down. He has until he makes a sajdah to sit back down on the last rakat. If he makes a sajdah, then he should join another rakat to the prayer to make it even. His fard prayer will become nafl and he will have to repeat his fard prayer (Ibn Abideen, Radd al-Muhtar, vol. 2, pg. 84-86).
