Question:

Why is it haram to pluck eyebrows?

Answer:

In The Name Of Allah, The Most-Merciful, The Most Kind

Plucking the eyebrows is prohibited in Islam and it comes under the heading of changing the creation of Allah.

Iblees says “And I will mislead them, and I will arouse in them [sinful] desires, and I will command them so they will slit the ears of cattle, and I will command them so they will change the creation of Allah. And whoever takes Satan as an ally instead of Allah has certainly sustained a clear loss.”[1]

Also narrated that Ibn Masood said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace of Allah be upon him) forbid plucking the eyebrows, filing teeth, adding hair extensions and tattooing, except in the case of treatment of disease.”[2]

Below are some reasons why plucking the eyebrows is prohibited:

  • It illustrates obedience to shaytan

  • It is disobedience to Allah and his messenger[3]

  • It distances one from the mercy of Allah[4]

  • The spiritual heart becomes dark and unhealthy[5]

Therefore, one must abstain from such actions and if this has been done then to engage in repentance in Allah the all-forgiving and most merciful.
