Calculating Past Zakaat

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za
Q: I have unfortunately neglected to pay my zakaat for the past 3 years. Is it possible for me to pay it all at once this year, and if so how do I calculate it?

A: 1. You have to pay zakaat on gold and silver, which must be calculated according to current gold and silver prices.

2. Once you have the value of the gold and silver in rands, add that to any cash money that you have.

3. Now calculate 2.5 percent of the total amount, then multiply the answer by three. That will give you your zakaat for the past three years. Note: The above method is a simple and straighforward method of calculating zakaat for past years and your zakaat will be discharged. And Allah knows best
