Repentance and Repeated Sinning

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: One sins, sincerely repents but commits same sin again due to weakness and sincerely repents again. What is the position of this person?

A. When you fall, do you remain where you have fallen or do you get up and walk again? The same applies to sinning; every time you commit sin, turn to Allah Ta’aala seeking forgiveness.
One who has not given up sin cannot afford to give up seeking forgiveness. Keep on seeking forgiveness after sinning, even if the sin is being repeated. A person who seeks forgiveness every time after sinning will not be counted amongst the habitual sinners, and this is no small achievement.

At the same time, every effort has to be made to avoid sin, and especially those factors that lead to sin. One day Inshaa Allaahu Ta’aala those sins will be given up completely.

May Allah Ta’aala bless us all with His closeness, Aameen.
