Im afraid of the dark and have nightmares. What should I do?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I was always feared of darkness from my childhood. I am almost 27 years old and still now I am afraid of sleeping alone. This fear increased when I recently got divorced within one month of my marriage. I am having very bad dream for last couple of years. And maximum time I see some ghost trying to kill me.

I am seeing this consistently and the theme of my dream is always the same. I really don’t know what to do with it. I want to get rid of my fear and those bad dreams. Please suggest me some authenticate process of Islam.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh.

Sister in Islām,

We offer our sympathies and make du‘ā that Allāh Taālā grants you full shifā’. Āmīn.

At the outset, we advise you to seek professional psychiatric help. Counselling and behavioural therapy have been found to be effective in treating such phobias.

Rasūlullāh (sallAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) has taught the following du‘ā’ to remove fear:

أعوذ بكلمات الله التامة من غضبه وشر عباده، ومن همزات الشياطين وأن يحضرون

A‘oodhu bikalimaatillaahit taammah, min ghadabihee wa sharri ‘ibaadih, wa min hamazaatish shayaateen wa ay yahduroon

“I seek refuge with the complete words of Allāh, from His anger and the evil of His slaves, and from the incitements of the devils and their attendance.”[1]

Recite this du‘ā’ whenever you feel afraid.

Rasūlullāh (sallAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) taught us about bad dreams or nightmares that they are “from shaytān.” And then he advised: “Thus, if any of you sees something (in his dream) that he dislikes, he should lightly spit to his left three times, and then seek protection from its evil, for then it will not harm him.”[2]

Hence, whenever you experience a frightful dream, spit lightly to your left three times and say, “I seek refuge from the evil of this dream,” and by the protection of Allāh, no harm will come to you.

Finally, always keep in mind that nothing can harm you when you have the protection of Allāh Ta‘ālā. Make constant du‘ā’ to Allāh to cure you and grant you good-health and wellbeing.

And Allah Ta‘ālā Knows Best
