Masturbation during fasting

if a person was gaining up on a fast (in the month shawwaal) that he broke in Ramadan (by sniffing the water too high in his nose) and during this “catching up fast” in the month shawaal he forgot that he was fasting. And in this state of mind, while he didn’t remembered that he was fasting he committed a sin by mastrubating (this after showing a lot of resistance). He broke his fast but does this make it obligatory for him to do kaffaarah since he forgot that he was fasting?

there was a great chance that if this person remembered  that he was fasting at the moment he would have won this war against his naffs and he wouldn’t mastrubate, but he unfortunately didn’t remember.

what are his consequences?

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Masturbation is a major sin. There are severe warnings for a person who masturbates in the Islamic tradition. One must abstain at all costs. You may read the following articles for guidelines on how to abstain from masturbation:

Masturbation with ejaculation invalidates the fast. It is necessary to make up for this fast.
