Sleeping after Fajr and Asr Namaz

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum,

Can you please let me know if there is any verdict/hadith concerning sleeping after Fajr and Asr prayers? I have often heard people saying one should not sleep after Fajr Namaz as it reduces one’s rizq. Is this true?

It’s Haram to sleep while leaving Fajr Salat. There is no doubt that it causes one to have loss of blessings.

To sleep after praying Fajr Salat without necessity, though it’s not Haram, yet it’s medically harmful and مکروہ (Makrooh) and reason for the deprivation of the sustenance from Allaah T’aala as the first part of the day is for recitation of Qur’aan, remembrance of Allaah T’aalaa, Salat ul Ishraaq and Chasht, then for the yearning for the sustenance meaning it’s time for the earning of the sustenance as it is narrated in several Ahadith. Furthermore, at this time the sustenance is distributed by Allaah T’aalaa as its mentioning is present in the ضعیف (Da’eef) narrations of Ibne’ ‘Abbas رضی اللہ عنہ ,Hazrat Fatimah رضی اللہ عنہا , and Hazrat Uthmaan bin ‘Affaan رضی اللہ عنہ, therefore, the فقہا (Jurists) have declared sleeping at this time to be مکروہ (Makrooh).

However, it must be clear that there is limit to the impermissibility of sleeping in the morning. It’s clarified by another narration in which Nabi صلی اللہ علیہ و سلم said that Allaah T’aalaa distributes the sustenance of the creation from the dawn till sunrise, meaning those people who remain negligent during this whole time they are deprived of the blessing of the sustenance. It is determined from this Hadith that forbiddance of sleeping is for the whole duration from dawn till sunrise, therefore, if a person remains busy in the تسبیحات (remembrance of Allaah T’aalaa) after Fajr for short while and sleeps after Salat ul Fajr then no قباحت وکراہت (deficiency and abomination) will remain for him.
