Should I pay heed to my father or follow the Sunnah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Before I ask the question I want to give a brief description of my background.
About me:
I was schooled at UAE from 4th to 10th class. Then I did my 12th at INDIA. After that I went in the path of ALLAH for 40 days. I started growing beard and wearing topi (cap). Then I did my engineering from 2006 to 2010. During my second year or so there, I started wearing kurtha paijama. Also I started growing my hair long ( trying to follow sunnah _ zulfah). After engineering I went for 4 months in the path of ALLAH. Then I went for M.Tech at IIT ( which is the most prestigious engineering institution in INDIA ). And till present I’ve been working as a LECTURER in a local engineering college.

Throughout these years, by the grace of ALLAH سبحانه وتعالى , I’ve maintained kurtha , topi, long hair and beard.

About my FATHER:

He is a salafi. He also follows qamees, long hair, beard, and topi but saying that these are not sunnahs, but just shi’aar.

Now to the question :

I’m at present at UAE with my FATHER, looking for job here.

So, now and then, discussion arises as to what dress I should wear for the interviews.

I understand that wearing Suit is allowed in shari’ah. But, I did mashoorah with some friends who go in the path of ALLAH, and decided to go with sunnah. Afterall, ALLAH is مقلب القلوب. And I understand that sahaba used not to be influenced by the people whom they met; rather they were influenced by the sahaba. Isn’t that how even the language of many countries were changed to arabic.

I told my father that I would go to the interview in sunnah dress, but if I get selected and the job requires me to wear uniform, I would do that. After some discussion he acquiesced.

Now I’ve got a call. And they asked to send a photo wearing suit.
For my father’s happiness I accepted and wore suit. But he snatched my cap and said to take a photo without cap. I protested a little.
Finally 3 photos were sent : one with suit, one with suit and cap, one with kurtha and cap.

Now interview is tomorrow. I’m really confused as to what to do.

Should I go with sunnah? Or should I wear suit?
I know that ALLAH is رازقنا and that getting this job or not getting it is not the criteria for victory. But, it’s our iman and a’mal during this situation.

So, will obeying father and his friends ( they say suit is the professional dress ) be the correct amal to do here or following sunnah ?

I want to please ALLAH and also not make my father sad. If نعوذ بالله I don’t get the job, then blame will be on sunnah.

So, Which is afzal considering the situation? please explain
جزاك الله خيرا كثيرا

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Assalāmu ῾alaykum wa Rahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh

There is no doubt that there is no dressing greater in value than the Sunnah dressing.

It is also Mubaah(permissible) to wear a suit. [1]

You may adopt that dressing which effectively serves your work application.
