Mehram for Umra

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Sir: I have read the various answers, but I did not get an answer. My Question: A lady, very pious and God-fearing, has gone for Umra with her close lady-friend, and the friend’s husband, father and mother – in a group. Now, she is worried whether she has done a wrong thing. Will appreciate your guidance and answer.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

In the Hanafi school, a woman must travel with her own mahram. Another’s mahram isn’t enough. However, there are followable positions–held by leading Hanafi scholars as well–that it is permitted for women to travel in safe modes of transportation when there is benefit or need.
