What Are the Limits of Allowing the Imam To Make Mistakes in Taraweeh?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Answered by: Shaykh Ahmed bin Mohamed Umarji

Question:

What are the limits of allowing the imam to make mistakes in Taraweeh and not correcting them on the spot? Would the سامع be sinful? Would it create karaha in the prayer?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The appointed listener should correct the Imam. If the appointed listener does not correct the Imam it is fardh for someone else to correct the Imam.1 It is impermissible for the listeners to not correct the Imam on the spot. If the Imam has already recited the amount of Qira’ah that is compulsory when he errs or gets stuck, he should proceed into Ruku or recite from another portion of the Quran.2

Only Allah knows best
