Question:

What is the ruling for wearing wedding rings? Would it be be tashabuh with another nation? Would it be classed as a shiaar of the non believers. and become it has become aam in all communities, would we be allowed to wear it?

Answer:
Wa Alaikum As Salaam,
It is permissible for Muslims to wear rings (both males and females). The name ‘wedding ring’ is simply a name/phrase that is used by some people to refer to rings which are exchanged by the newly married couple on the day of the marriage. If they do not call it a ‘wedding ring’, then it will not be a wedding ring.
If one gets a ring at the time of his/her marriage, then it is permissible to wear. However, a Muslim must refrain from considering this as a wedding ring which has a special significance.
A Muslim must also understand that in Islam there is no teaching regarding ‘a wedding ring’ and this has no significance in Islam. It is a non-Muslim practice which one must refrain from. Hence, there is no requirement of giving a ‘wedding ring’ to one’s spouse. A person is free to give whatever gifts he/she wishes to give to the other spouse. Whether, these are cash, jewellery or other valuables.
If one has rings that were given on one’s wedding day as ‘wedding rings’, then one can continue to wear them, but must not attach the name ‘wedding rings’ to these. Also, one must not put any significance to these as being the customary ‘wedding rings’. These are simply rings which are permissible to wear, but one must have the correct understanding of these.
