Re: The Fiqh of menstruation

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I have recently heard many stories about what women can and can’t do during the menstruation period. I have been told that when in menstruation women are not allowed to take part in khatams (are these valid?!) and they can not touch anything Islamic i.e. books or anything and they can not even touch the namaz mat. What is the Islamic view on this? And what have these statements been based on?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,

Only touching and reciting the Qur’an, and ritual prayer (salat) are prohibited during menstruation. These other matters are all permitted (or, rather, recommended).

They can also listen and ‘read’ the Qur’an without touching or pronouncing it. See answer(s) mentioned below.

Faraz Rabbani.
