Someone got upset with me for putting on my shoes while standing…

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

It is best to wear one’s shoes while sitting, or while leaning against something, because of a Prophetic instruction to do so. However, it is not disliked to wear them while standing, because it is established that several major Companions used to wear their sandals while standing.

The wisdom behind the preference to sit or lean is that it is generally more dignified—you do not greet people with your wrong side, for example.

Therefore, you should take the benefit from the person’s censure, and overlook their harshness for the sake of Allah, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) showed us in his radiant example.

Faraz Rabbani.
