Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

What is the ruling of children’s toys that are personified, are they considered statues? And does the dispensation apply to males as well, or only females?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate. May His abundant blessing and most perfect of peace be on His Beloved Prophet, the best of creation, and his family, companions and followers.

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

My teachers in Damascus, such as Shaykh Hassan al-Hindi and others, explain that the dispensation of playing with figure toys refers to personified ones—otherwise, there would be no reason to mention it being a dispensation. The dispensation relates to both boys and girls, and does not prevent angels from entering the house.

Other scholars, including most major Indian fuqaha, hold that the dispensation is limited to non-personified toys only. This was explained by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Adam: his answer can be found in the www.sunnipath.com archives. This is a more cautious opinion.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
