The Sunnah of Carrying Weapons: Firearms, Guns, and Target Practice

Q: Those that promote firearms and guns say that to carry a gun is Sunnat but it is more correct to say that to carry any weapon is Sunnat? Can it also be said that shooting in target practice is an act of reward? Can it also be said that carrying a firearm and making salaat is more rewarding than without a firearm?

A:

  1. The Hadith teaches us to learn self defense so that we may save ourselves against any enemy or any other harm. Equipping one’s self against harm can be acquired through keeping any weapon. We are however urged to conform to all the legal requirements when acquiring a firearm.
  2. If a person practices shooting with the correct intention, insha-Allah he will receive reward.
  3. One will not receive more reward through mere keeping a firearm at the time of performing Salaah.
