Lillah and Sadaqah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

1.  Is it permissible to use Sadaqah money to build a room in a Madrassah?

2.  When giving Lillah donations is it permissible to make intention of Lillah and Sadaqah?

3.  Could the money be used for building rooms, etc because the money was given as Lillah and Sadaqah?

4.  Will a person get reward for both Lillah and Sadaqah?

Answer:

In actual fact Zakaat and Sadaqah are also types of Lillah because this contribution is also made to acquire the pleasure of Allah.  On the other hand, because the Masaarif of Zakaah and Nafl Sadaqah are different, that is why in South Africa funds are collected under two labels: (a) Zakaah and Sadaqah (i.e. Sadaqatul Fitr and Fidyah).  (b) Lillah (Nafl Sadaqah).  The second type of funds can be utilised in any good cause, i.e. the construction of a Masjid, Madrassah or paying the salaries of the Imam, Muazzin, etc. and also to fulfil the needs of the poor.  One can also donate these funds to a destitute Muslim but it cannot be donated to a rich Muslim.  Therefore, if you are referring to Nafl Sadaqah then it will be permissible to construct a room in the Madrassah. By making intention of Sadaqah one automatically makes intention of Lillah and will receive the reward of Sadaqah.  If you differentiate between Sadaqah and Lillah then please send the necessary details to us.
