Is fertility treatment, specifically ivf permissible?
IVF treatment between the spouses is permissible. Involving a third party – be that the egg, sperm or even womb of a third party – is unlawful (haram) and amounts to adultery (zina).[1]
Procedurally, the implantations should be made by a female doctor. Moreover, some scholars have raised the issue that extracting the sperm involves masturbation which is impermissible. To mitigate this, the wife should be involved in the process.
