The Sharai ruling that an Aalim gives in reply to a question is called fatwa:
الفتوی ھو الحکم الشرعي یعني ما افتی بہ العالم (قواعد الفقہ، ۴۰۷)
و معناہ في اللغة الاجابة عن سوال ما الخ ثم قد خصت الکلمة للاجابة عن سوال شرعي (المصباح، ۱۹، ۲۰)
