I am in my 3rd year studying for my bachelors in business administration with a major in finance. In about a year’s time, I will be entering into the job market. However, I want to earn a halal income. My university recently held a ‘job fair’ where many different firms came to give information, take resumes etc. So I have a lot of information of many firms from different types (some are pharmaceuticals, banks, consultancy firms, multinationals and the list goes on). Can you please explain how I can understand if a certain company “XYZ” is halal and I can work with them? Because I am sure its just not banks, there are many others that would provide unlawful income. So please explain what I need to know to draw the line between firms providing lawful and unlawful wealth in Shariah.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Sharī῾ah has placed great emphasis on the nature of the work. If the employment involves any impermissible (harām) work then it is impermissible to accept such an employment. If the work itself is free of any impermissible element, it is permissible to do such a job.[1]
