Reconciling between Punishment and Mercy

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: On one side, there are stories of punishment of Allah on people like scholar Balam ibn Baora who, even having so much knowledge and Ism e Azam, prayed against Musa (Alaihis Salam). Then, there is a muazzin who abandoned Islam to marry a Christian women. So, how do we save ourselves with all our Ibadahs when these great worshippers couldn’t save themselves with their full-life’s deeds?

On the other side, there are stories of mercy of Allah on how every small deed will be taken into account. Like the murderer who killed 100 people, the prostitute who showed mercy to a thirsty, dying dog. There single deed was enough to save them. How to re-concile between these judgement (punishment and mercy)?

A: The reconciliation is before sinning focus on the punishment of Allah and after having sinned do not lose hope in Allah but rather on the mercy of Allah.
