Marrying a Bank Manager

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: I’m a widow. There is proposal for me of a person who works as manager in a bank; I don’t know if it’s an Islamic bank or not. According to my knowledge the salary of bank is not halal.  Is this true or not and what should I do: reject this proposal or accept?

A: Whilst is not absolutely haraam to seek am employment at a conventional bank, it is definitely something that has to be avoided, hence we suggest if  your potential suitor  is working at a conventional bank and you envisage him to be a suitable partner with good akhlaaq (charatcted), you discuss with him the long term possibility of seeking hundred percent alternate employment at a later stage. If it is a possibility that he is open to, his praposal is something you could consider!

And Allah knows best
