ASAK,
What is the meaning of Rooman khan
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
As Muslims, we are advised to assume good names for our children, since the name of a person has an effect on his traits and characteristics.
Nabi (salallāhu ‘alayhiwasallam) said regarding the assumption of good names: “indeed you shall be called on the day of Qiyaamah with your names and the names of your fathers, so give good names to yourselves”.[1]
We hereunder provide our response to your query:
1. The word “Rooman” is an Arabic name having no specific meaning.[2] It is a good name to keep since the wife of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiyallahu Anhu) and the mother of Hadhrat Aisha (Radhiyallahu Anha) was Umme Rooman (Radhiyallahu Anha).
2. The word “Khan” is an Urdu word meaning “Leader, Ruler or Ameer”.[3]
It is a good name to keep. However, it will be advisable for one to keep names of the Anbiyaa, Sahabah, Taabi’een and pious predecessors.
And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
