Is the name Furqaan a good name to keep?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My son likes the name Furqaan for his baby boy. Please let me know if it’s a good name to keep.

We would also like to know the correct spelling, pronunciation and meaning of the name.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

As Muslims, we are advised to keep good names for our children, since the name of a person has an effect on his traits and characteristics.

Nabi (salallāhu ‘alayhiwasallam) said regarding the keeping of good names: “indeed you shall be called on the day of Qiyaamah with your names and the names of your fathers, so give good names to yourselves”.

The name “Furqaan” means “criterion”, referring to the Holy Qur’an which differentiates between Haqq (Truth) and Batil (Falsehood).[1]

It is a good name to keep.

The pronunciation of the word “Furqaan” which you have correctly spelt is the same as the English variant/version of the Arabic word.
