My wife is about to have a hysterectomy, meaning all of her female reproductive organs will be removed and she will not be able to conceive children at all. We have no previous children, and I was wondering if in this case it is allowable for us to have an IVF, or what we can do Islamically to have children of our own.
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh
Hysterectomy is not permissible in the Shari’ah as it is an irreversible method on contraception. It will only be permissible if the womans health will be endangered without hysterectomy. (Fatawa Mahmoodiya, Pg:114, Vol: 5)
If a couple are experiencing difficulty in conceiving a child the natural way, it will be permissible to adopt the procedure of In Vitro Fertilisation with the condition that the sperm belongs solely to the husband and the egg belongs to the wife. It will not be permissible to use a third person’s sperm under any circumstance. (Jaami’ul Fatawa, Pg: 469, Vol: 1)
And Allah knows best
