Zakaat to Aunt

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: I have an uncle who has 2 wives. His 2 children from his first wife, my aunt, have died. He now spends most of his time with his second wife and travels the world with her and their son. He gives the first wife very basic things for the house, ie. buys only basic groceries. She is only allowed to switch on the geyser every 2nd or 3rd day and cannot use the phone as he limits the cost with a phone card. Can I give zakaat funds to my aunt for her personal toiletries etc?

A: Yes you may give your aunt zakaat if she does not have surplus cash or jewellery to the value of zakaat nisaab.
