Is a syed allowed to marry a non-syed?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I got a marriage proposal from syed family. We are belonging to non-syed family. I search the web about this issue but not clear about this issue. Few are telling haram and few halal. Request you to please give some reference from Quran or hadees. So i can reply to them.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

A Syed is a descendant of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.[1]

It is permissible for a Syed to marry a non-Syed, regardless of the Syed being a male or female.[2] In the case of a female, the consent of the parents is required to marry a non-Syed.[3]
