Can I Call My Son Hamid Instead of Abdul-Hamid?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

Can “Abdul Hamid” be registered or used as “Hamid” only?

We like the name “Hammad” but our elders are insisting that we keep “Abdul Hamid”. People usually call only by one name; we are confused.

Answer

Thank you for your question. It is permissible to call your son Hameed for short, or if someone was named Abdur-Rasheed, he could be called Rasheed for short. If you encourage people to call your son the full name, Abdul-Hamid, they will. It is not difficult.

Hammad is also a good name. The only thing that you should be careful of, is that if you name him Abdul-Hameed, do not nickname him Hamoodi, for that, is changing one of the names of Allah. Rather, you can call him ‘Aboodi as a nickname.

Please see the details of naming here:

May Allah give you the best of this world and the next.
