Praying in Short Sleeves

I follow Imam Abu Hanifa. When I pray fard salah behind any imam I do not recite surah Fatiha, but my friends who follow other imams do. They told me one hadith of Prophet Muhammed said “One who does not recite surah Fatiha his salah is incomplete”. So please tell me why we don’t recite surah Fatiha.

I was diagnosed with Chron’s Disease a year ago, and I have tried all types of medicines which have only made my condition a lot worse. Now I am at a point where I do not use medicines at all, and pray my pain will be relieved. I am the oldest child and I am feeling like a burden to my parents. I researched online for remedies and found that marijuana can be used as a remedy for the symptoms of Chron’s disease. I am very helpless because I am not sure if it would be permitted in Islam to use marijuana if it’s for medicinal purposes. I am not a pot head. I don’t smoke. I am a practicing Muslim and I try my hardest to be as good as I can. Please help me find a fatwa for this predicament. My condition is getting worse by the day.

What is the ruling on moustache in Islam? Should the moustache be completely removed or rather only shortened? One alim in our area has long moustache in the two corners in upper lip and he said he is following the Sunnah of Umar bin Khattab (Radhi Allahu Anhu) who used to pull his moustaches hair near the lips when he was in deep thought of something and from this it is established that Umar (Radhi Allahu Anhu) had hair on both sides of the lips.

If a hafiz made a major mistake in reciting the Holy Qur’an in taraweeh which changes the meaning of word or words, do we have to repeat those rakats or not?

I am a chartered accountant by profession and have been facing a dilemma. During my articleship (on job training) I have been mostly posted at different types of financial institutions. Now that I have decided to enter the industry, my CV shows significant experience of banking and other financial institutions. This has resulted in most of the job offers being made by different banks to me. In this regard, what I want to ask is (i) Is there any permissibility for working as an employee with the bank in the capacity of an accountant or auditor? (ii) What is your view on Islamic banks and is it allowed to join an Islamic bank in the above-mentioned capacities?

Muslims in Toronto are facing a new challenge these days regarding jumuah salat timings. A few of the masjids here have started jumuah congregation before zuhr timings, as we are observing Daylight Saving Timing these days. Let me write you detail of timings: Today is September 08, 2008 Sunrise : 06:49 AM Sunset: 07:41 PM Zuhr salat time starts: 01:18 PM The masjids that are observing early jumuah prayer are conducting it at 12:30 PM. When some people went to one of the three local scholars who allowed early salat for an explanation of this act, he told that we don’t find any specific timing mentioned for jumuah prayer so we can do this as it is lunch time and in this way more people can easily attend jumuah congregation. Secondly, he told that the early timings of jumuah was also observed by the sahabah, so we can also do it as well. Please reply in detail and mention any early jumuah congregation from Quran, Hadith or Sahabah.

Zakat on money saved for house building

I was hoping you could shed some light on this matter. My wife has given birth a few months ago and her maternity leave is over. She was working in a female environment and now it is time for her to go back. My current situation is that her wage is sufficient for us to survive on but my job isn’t. So we made mashwhera and decided that rather then we both go to work and put the child in childcare, she would go to work and I would stay at home and look after our child. I have been ridiculed by many brothers in the masjid where I perform salah, saying that this is incorrect and that this is the reason why so many of the youngster are going astray, as they miss out on the mother’s love. I was wondering if I had done the correct thing or should I reconsider the situation where I work more hours to compensate but then that would mean I would see my child less. I hope your words of wisdom will enlighten me to act upon what is best for my deen and family.
