What Is the Ruling on Using the Multiplication Symbol?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question: Assalamu alaykum

I’ve read that the multiplication symbol (the one that looks like the letter “x”) originated from St. Andrew’s Cross. What is the ruling on using this symbol?

Answer: Wa ‘alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh

Thank you for your question. You may rest assured that it is perfectly fine to use the ‘x’ symbol which represents multiplication. Even if it is established that its historical origin is connected to St. Andrew’s Cross, the fact that it is not a representation of it in our time and culture makes it permissible to use. This is the case with all similar symbols, words and phrases, as was mentioned in the answer related to the Nike logo.

May Allah bless you with the best of both worlds.
