When at the Kaaba, should I look at the Kaaba when praying or look down?

In the Name of Allah, with blessings and peace on the Messenger of Allah

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

It doesn’t affect the validity of the prayer to look towards the Kaaba when praying in Mecca, and isn’t blameworthy. However, the sunna remains to look down towards one’s place of prostration. [As established in hadiths in Muslim, and the other works of sunan]

Ibn Abidin explains in Radd al-Muhtar that–besides being the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)–the legal reasoning behind this is that one wouldn’t be safe from something distracting one’s attention during the prayer if one were looking straight ahead.

And Allah alone gives success.

قال الإمام الحصكفي (رحمه الله تعالى) في الدر المختار:
( ولها آداب ) تركه لا يوجب إساءة ولا عتابا كترك سنة الزوائد , لكن فعله أفضل ( نظره إلى موضع سجوده حال قيامه , وإلى ظهر قدميه حال ركوعه , وإلى أرنبة أنفه حال سجوده , وإلى حجره حال قعوده . وإلى منكبه الأيمن والأيسر عند التسليمة الأولى والثانية ) لتحصيل الخشوع

قال خاتمة المحققين سيدي محمد أمين ابنُ عابدين (رحمه الله تعالى) في رد المحتار:
( قوله لتحصيل الخشوع ) علة للجميع لأن المقصود الخشوع وترك التكليف , فإذا تركه صار ناظرا إلى هذه المواضع قصد أو لا , وفي ذلك حفظ له عن النظر إلى ما يشغله , وفي إطلاقه شمول المشاهد للكعبة لأنه لا يأمن ما يلهيه , وإذا كان في الظلام أو كان بصيرا يحافظ على عظمة الله تعالى لأن المدار عليها , وتمامه في الإمداد وإذا كان المقصود الخشوع , فإذا كان في هذه المواضع ما ينافيه يعدل إلى ما يحصله فيها .
