Sitting for i’tikaaf if one cannot fast

Q: A person who is submitted to dialisis 2 to 3 times a week can not fast. Can he still sit in the sunnah i’tikaaf? Keep in mind that he will also have to leave the masjid when going to the hospital. He could go straight to the hospital and return on the shortest route possible.

A: He may sit for nafil I’tikaaf.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
