How does Government Taxes effect our Zakaat

Q: In South Africa, Government taxes can amout to 40% of ones income. If any, how does this affect our annual zakaat?

A: If the taxes are paid before one’s zakaat date, then one will not include that amount in one’s zakaatable assets.

ولو كان الدين خراج أرض يمنع وجوب الزكاة بقدره وهذا إذا كان خراجا يؤخذ بحق وكان تمام الحول بعد إدراك الغلة وأما إذا كان قبل إدراكها فلا وما يؤخذ بغير حق لا يمنع وجوب الزكاة ما لم يؤخذ منه قبل الحول. (الفتاوى الهندية 1/173)
