Question:

Did the Prophet Muḥammad (peace and blessings upon him) see Allāh with his own eyes on the night of Isrā’ wal M’erāj?

Answer:

In the Name of Allāh, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for your question.

There have been extensive scholarly discussions and views regarding the Prophet Muḥammad (peace and blessings upon him) seeing Allāh on the night of ‘Ascension’.

Here-below are a few referenced statements.

“Thus He (Allāh) revealed to His slave what He revealed. The heart did not err in what he saw.” (Qur’ān 53:10)

Ibn Abbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) said,“Muḥammad (peace and blessings upon him) saw his Lord.” (Tirmidhī)

Abū Dhar (may Allāh be pleased with him) states, “I asked the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings upon him)”, “Did you see your Lord?” He replied, “I certainly saw His light.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

There is a debate amongst the scholarly fraternity. While some believe the seeing was with his heart, others suggest the seeing was in actuality with his eyes.
