Reading chemistry books which is written by a non Muslim and dedicated to his dead father

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

can I read a chemistry book which is written by a non Muslim and he sacrifice the book to his dead father. if this is sinful to read the book what kind of sin will it

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

It is permissible to read a book authored by a non-Muslim provided that the content:

  • conforms to the teachings of Islām.
  • does not glorify other than Allāh.
  • does not promote sin and vice.
  • enhances one’s knowledge or provides other benefits.

The aspect of the book being dedicated to the author’s father is not considered; hence, there will be no sin in one reading such a book that does not violate the ruling mentioned herewith.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
