Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

2.can we say prophet Muhammad saw is best friend of allah ?one Maulana said in his bayan so one or two illiterate people said best friend we can’t say but according to me we can say because the word khalilullah is used for Ibrahim alay salam and khalil means best friend so why cant we say our beloved prophet Muhammad s.a.w is best friend of allah…in this matter i am correct or not please clarify mufti sahab

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahiwa barakatuhu,

  1. The title of Habeeb is not confined to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), or even to Muslims.  It is permissible to use the term for a non Muslim.
  2. There is no problem in calling the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) the best friend of Allah.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
