If Somebody Drinks Water, Will This Suffice in Fulfilling the Fardh of Gargling in Ghusl

Question:

If somebody drinks water, will this suffice in fulfilling the fardh of gargling in ghusl? (making sure the water wets the entire mouth)

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The objective of the farḍ(mandatory) act in ghusl(Islamic bath) according to the Ḥanafī school is to ensure water reaches the entire inner mouth. If this is obtained by drinking then it will suffice. However, this is against the sunnah (prophetic practice). – (See: Rad-Al-Muḥtār, Page 284, Volume 1, Dār Al-Ālam Al-Kutub)[1]

Ibn`Abbas (may Allāh be pleased with him) said, “When a person with ritual impurity takes a bath and forgets to rinse his mouth and nose, he should redo the cleaning of the mouth and nose.” – (Al-Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah 2071) [2]

Only Allāh knows best.
