Zakaat on New Wealth

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: My zakat is due in April this year. A set of bangles was given to me in January. This year’s zakat I paid in April. Next year can I pay all my zakat in January to make it easier? Regarding my money: sometimes I use and sometimes I add to it so I’m not sure of the amount I had for a year?

A: Since your zakaat is due in April then you should just calculate your zakaatable items in april and that would be the amount you have to give. Whatever you accumulated during the year will be added when you calculate. It is not necessary for a year to pass over every zakaatable item. So if you had R20,000 cash and during the year you accumulated another R5,000. Then at the end of your zakaat year your must pay zakaat on R25,000.
