Bokashi composting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Reminder

On 27/8/2014, I had posted my response to Fatwa # 30335. Two weeks have passed since then but my question has not been answered.

I want to know whether using 1) Bokashi composting, which is different from ordinary composting, and 2) worm composting are each permissible to use on garbage that contains haram items. Please find the details, which I had posted on 27/8/2014, below:

Assalaamu Alaikum

This is with reference to my query in Fatwa # 30335.

The garbage I intend to compost can contain lots of haram items like dead animals (lizards, rats and possibly even cats/dogs) and faeces etc.

Regarding worm composting: I might try to minimise such items, but they will still be left inside. Worm composting can still be carried out even if meat etc. are present in the garbage, even though it is better not to put such items in the worm bin.

Regarding Bokashi composting: It is different from ordinary composting. A huge variety of items, including meat, can be composted using Bokashi, not just the items you mentioned. Secondly, in Bokashi, we deliberately add microorganisms to the garbage (using a powder or liquid as carrier) whereas in ordinary composting the microorganisms naturally occurring in the soil perform the composting.

For more information on Bokashi composting, please refer to my previous query (fatwa # 30335) as well as the links I provided earlier.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The question has been answered last week. However due to some technical problem it may have not reached you. Hereunder is the answer;

If the garbage you intend to compose contains Haram items such as dead animals, faeces etc. then it would not be permissible to utilize these Haram items and feed them to the worms.[1]

Shari’ah has prohibited the feeding of Haram to anyone, whether human beings or animals or creatures.
