In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The name ‘Saleena’ has several meanings:
- ‘Moon’ which comes from the Greek word ‘Selene’ meaning ‘the moon’.[1] ‘Selene’ was the name of the Greek mythological goddess of the moon.[2]
- ‘Heavenly’ and ‘celestial’[3] which is the French form of the Latin word ‘caelina’, also meaning heavenly, [4] coming from ‘caelum’ meaning ‘heaven’ or ‘sky’.[5]
- ‘Solemn’ and ‘dignified’ originating from French.[6]
- ‘Torrential’[7] which is derived from the Turkish word ‘sal’ which means ‘flood’. [8]
- ‘Salty’[9] which is derived from the Latin word ‘sal’ meaning ‘salt’.[10]
- ‘Swamp’ and ‘salt mill’ in Arabic. [11]
‘Saleena’ is not a suitable Muslim name. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) encouraged us to keep names that have good meanings. Consider the following Hadith:
إنّكم تُدعَوْنَ يومَ القيامَةِ باسمائِكُم وأسماءِ آبائكُم، فاحسِنُوا أسماءكم[12]
On the Day of Resurrection you will be called by your names and by your father’s names, so give yourselves good names. (Abu Dawood: 4949)
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) also changed a name that had a negative meaning to one that had a positive one[13]:
غيَّرَ اسمَ عاصيةَ، وقال أنتِ جميلة[14]
He (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) changed the name of A’asiyah and said “You are Jameelah.” (Abu Dawood: 4952)
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) changed the name ‘A’siyah’ which means one who disobeys to ‘Jameelah’ which means friendly and courteous.
As a general principle we recommend that you keep a name that Allah Ta’āla and Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) have mentioned[15] or the name of a Sahaabiyah.[16] You should refrain from keeping a name that has a bad meaning or negative connotations in light of the above Ahadith.

فلما جاء الإسلام نهوا عنه ولعله لم يسمها مطيعة مع أنها ضد العاصية مخافة التزكية وقال في النهاية إنما غيره لأن شعار المؤمن الطاعة والعصيان ضدها انتهى
