Helping a Sister Who Bought a House Through Interest Based Financing

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) My sister and her husband have purchased a house on interest. I had tried to persuade them to not purchase the house but they followed the fatwa that it is permissible in the United States because of being a dire necessity. My question is am I allowed to help them to move into their new house? I don’t believe what they are doing is right and I do not want to help them but my sister is asking me to help. I do not want to assist in sin. [Irfan]

A.) Assisting your sister to move into her new premises has nothing to do with her purchasing the house on interest. They are two separate issues.

To engage in interest bearing transactions is a sin. You have not been involved in that. Your assistance to her will be fulfilling your Shar’ee rights of maintaining family ties with your sister. And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best
