Is it recommended for someone praying on his own to recite the various Allahu Akbar’s and the sami` Allahu liman hamidah out loud?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In order for them to count, all of the verbal formulas that are recited in prayer must be recited loud enough for one to hear them oneself. Otherwise, it is as if one hasn’t said them at all.

If one is the imam of a group prayer, then it is recommended to utter some of these formulas even louder so that the followers can hear what he is saying. Thus, an imam will recite the various Allahu Akbar’s and the sami` Allahu liman hamidah loud enough for people behind him to hear what he is saying. This, however, is only recommended for the imam. Someone praying alone recites the Allahu Akbar’s and the sami` Allahu liman hamidah to himself (i.e., loud enough for him to hear himself, but not loud enough for others to hear him).
