What is the concept of Shab-e-Barat and is it considered bida’h?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

(Fatwa: 1183/1188/N=10/1434)

It is mustahab to worship on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat i.e. in the night of 15th Shaban individually, offering nafl salah, doing tilawat and getting busy in zikr. Various hadiths have been narrated about it by a number of Sahabah. Some of these hadiths are Sahih as per some Muhaddithin. So those who say that it is bida’h to worship in Shab-e-Barat individually they are wrong. However, some uneducated and common people perform various kinds of nonsense during this night such as lighting bulbs, preparing a variety of dishes, wearing new clothes, making halwa or some people get together in mosques and worship collectively, and if they consider it necessary then it is bida’h. Muslims should avoid these things.
