I am based in Tanzania. I am studying in an Islamic High School. My fellow Muslim room mates are indulged in watching football. What can I do about this?
Also, the same room mates waste alot of food.
Is there an islamic way to kindly explain the above to them, that its wrong?

As-salaamu `alaykum wa-ramatullahi wa-barakatuh.
The most effective way to correct a wrong is to lead by example.
Inform your room mates that you will take charge of the left over fresh food to earn them reward. You may then;
- Give the food to the poor needy with the intention of sadaqa.
- Give the food to birds or animals.
- In the case where one does not have any reach to animals or birds, leave it in an open place where some bird or animal will find it`s way to the food.[1]
Your colleagues will observe your conduct and learn how to avoid wasting food and learn to serve fellow creation of Allah.
You may share the following hadith with them;
Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said;
أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ أَنْ تُشْبِعَ كَبِدًا جَائِعًا. [2]
“The best charity one can do is to fill an empty stomach (human or animal, any living being)”
And Allah Ta`ala Knows Best.

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلَامٍ، قَالَ: لَمَّا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – الْمَدِينَةَ انْجَفَلَ النَّاسُ إِلَيْهِ وَقِيلَ: قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -، فَجِئْتُ فِي النَّاسِ لِأَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا اسْتَبَنْتُ وَجْهَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – عَرَفْتُ أَنَّ وَجْهَهُ لَيْسَ بِوَجْهِ كَذَّابٍ، فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ شَيْءٍ تَكَلَّمَ بِهِ أَنْ قَالَ: “يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، أَفْشُوا السَّلَامَ، وَأَطْعِمُوا الطَّعَامَ، وَصَلُّوا بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّاسُ نِيَامٌ، تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِسَلَامٍ”
