Is My Bank Job Permissible?

Assalamu alaikum warahmatullah,

Brother I have a question regarding my job, if it is halal or haram.

I am working for a bank dealing with PPI (Payment Protection Insurance) complaints. Customers have been missold PPI and have made claims for a full refund. My job is to calculate how much PPI they have paid and how much interest they have been charged, I then pay them their full refund plus 8% compensation.

I’m not selling insurance or any interest based products. I am simply refunding the customers for what the bank have unfairly sold and charged them.

Would my role in the bank still be classed as haram?

Answer

Since your job does not include any direct relation to interest bearing transactions, your job is Halāl.[1] The income gained from it shall also be Halāl.
